Crochet Lace Square Pattern – Crosswind Lace Square

Hello everyone, today I have a crochet lace square pattern to share with you. This a square version of the Crosswind Lace Stitch pattern I made a while ago. It features all of the stitches in that pattern, although the pattern repeat is not 100% the same.

I loved that stitch pattern so much that I was curious to see what it would look like turned into a square shape.

Even though I designed this as a crochet lace square, I think there are a few ways you could use it!

It would look pretty as a centerpiece on a table or dresser, but it could also be used underneath a vase, candle, lamp, or other small item. 

You could even make several squares and join them together to make a larger lace tablecloth or runner. There are so many possibilities!

About This Pattern

For this crochet lace square, I used Size 10 Crochet Thread and a 1.65mm Crochet Hook. 

The thread that I chose is from Artiste in the color Antique. I picked this thread from Hobby Lobby, and I really like this line from Artiste because it comes in a TON of pretty colors and it’s reasonably priced. So that’s great if you need to make lots of lace.

After finishing the square, I blocked it using just plain water. Blocking takes a little work, but the result is totally worth it!

Blocking really helps open the lace up, giving your piece more definition and allows it to lay FLAT. 

I block my crochet lace pieces by soaking in water, gently patting the excess water out with a towel, and then pinning it to a blocking board.

If you don’t have a fancy pants blocking board, don’t worry! You can use a scrap piece of cardboard if it’s thick enough. 

I’m also making those cute X shapes with a combination of chains and a two treble crochets together. Don’t freak out if you don’t know what that means, I have step by step instructions on how to do this.

  • St(s) – stitch(es)
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Ch(s) – chains

    • In this pattern, I will be talking about the “legs” of the tr2tog. To make a tr2tog:
      • Yarn over (YO) twice, insert your hook into the designated stitch and pull up a loop.
      • YO, pull through 2 loops on your hook. (3 loops on hook)
      • YO, pull through 2 loops on your hook. (2 loops on hook)
      • This is the first leg of the tr2tog.
      • YO twice, insert your hook into the next designated stitch and pull up a loop.
      • YO, pull through 2 loops on your hook (5 loops on hook)
      • YO, pull through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on hook)
      • This is the second leg of the tr2tog.
      • YO and pull through all 3 loops.

Crosswind Lace Stitch Square Pattern:

Make a magic ring or ch 7 and sl st to the first ch to make a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 3 dc in ring. (Ch 3, 5 dc in ring) X 3 times. Ch 3, dc in ring, sl st to top of starting ch 3. (20 dc, 4 ch 3 spaces)

Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), skip a dc, dc in next dc. Ch 2, *(dc, ch 5, dc) in next ch 3 corner space. 

Ch 2, skip a dc, dc in next dc, ch 2, skip a dc, dc in next dc, ch 2*

Repeat from *to* around. Sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 5.

Round 3: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), dc in next ch 2 space, ch 2, *(dc, ch 5, dc) in next ch 5 corner space. 

*Ch 2, dc in next ch 2 space x3 times), ch 2.*

Repeat from *to* around. 

Dc in next ch 2 space, ch 2, sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 5.

Round 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in next ch 2 space, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch 2 space, dc in next dc *(2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch 5 corner space.

(Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch 2 space x4 times), dc in next dc*

Repeat from *to* around.

2 dc in next ch 2 space, dc in next dc, 2 dc in last ch 2 space. Sl st to top of starting ch 3. (17 dc on each side of square, 4 ch 5 spaces)

Round 5: Sl st into the next 3 dc. Ch 1, sc in same st. Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in the same st, skip 5 dc and in the first ch of the ch 5 corner, insert hook and make the second leg. Ch 4, and sc in the same ch as the second leg of tr2tog.

Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in the same ch as the sc you just made. Place the second leg in the last ch of the the ch 5 corner. Ch 4, sc in same ch as the second leg of tr2tog just made.

*Ch 4, tr2tog, first leg in the same ch as the sc just made, skip 5 dc, place second leg of tr2tog into the next dc. Ch 4, sc in same dc as second leg of tr2tog just made.*

Repeat from *to* until next corner.

Place the first leg of the tr2tog in the first ch of the ch 5 corners and the second leg in the last ch.

Sl st to first sc of this round.

Round 6: Sl st in the next 4 chs, sl st into next tr2tog. Ch 1, sc in same st.

*Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in the same st, the second leg in the next tr2tog. Ch 4, sc into same st as the second leg tr2tog just made.*

Repeat from *to* around.

Sl st to first sc of this round.

Round 7: Ch 6 (counts as dc and ch 3). Sc in next tr2tog. Ch 3, (dc, ch 5, dc) in next sc. (this should be the first corner). 

*Ch 3, sc in next tr2tog, ch 3, dc in next sc. Ch 3, sc in next tr2tog, ch 3, dc in next sc*

Repeat from *to* until corner sc.

(Dc, ch 5, dc) in corner sc.

Sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 6.

Round 8: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next ch 3 space, dc in next sc. 2 dc in next ch 3 space. Dc in next dc. 

(3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in ch 5 corner space. 

*Dc in next dc. 2 dc in next ch 3 space, dc in next sc, 2 dc in next ch 3 space*

Repeat from *to* around until corner spaces. 

(3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in each ch 5 corner space. (17 dc across each side, 4 ch 5 spaces)

Round 9: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2). Skip 2 dc, dc in next dc. *Ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc.* Ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc. 

Ch 2, (dc, ch 5, dc) in next ch 5 corner space.

Repeat from *to* until corner spaces.

(Ch 2, dc, ch 5, dc) in ch 5 corner space.

Sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 6.

Round 10-11: Sl st into next ch 2 space. Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2). *Dc in next ch 2 space, ch 2.*

Repeat from *to* until corner spaces.

(dc, ch 5, dc) in ch 5 corner spaces.

Sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 5.

Round 12: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *2 dc in next ch 2 space, dc in next dc*

Repeat from *to* until corner spaces

(2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in ch 5 corner spaces.

Sl st to top of starting ch 3. 

Round 13: Sl st into next 3 sts. Ch 1, sc in same st. *Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in the same st, skip 5 dc and place second leg in the next dc. Ch 4, sc in the same st as the second leg of tr2tog.*

Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in the same st just worked into, skip 5 dc and place second leg of tr2tog into the first ch of next ch 5 corner space. Ch 4, sc in same ch. Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in the same ch and the second leg in the last ch of ch 5 corner space. Ch 4, sc in the same ch as second leg of tr2tog.

Repeat from *to* until next corner.

Work tr2tog legs in the first and last chs of ch 5 corner spaces.

Sl st to first sc.

Round 14: Sl st into next 4 chs, sl st into tr2tog. Ch 1, sc in same st. *Ch 4, tr2tog with the first leg in same st and the second leg in the next tr2tog. Ch 4, sc in same st as second leg of tr2tof just made.*

Repeat from *to* around 

Sl st to first sc.

Round 15: Ch 6 (counts as dc and ch 3). Sc in next tr2tog, ch 3, dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in next tr2tog, ch 3, (dc, ch 5, dc) in next sc. 

Ch 3, sc in next tr2tog, ch 3, *dc in next sc, ch 3, sc in next tr2tog, ch 3*

Repeat from *to* around.

Place (dc, ch 5, dc) in corner sc.

Sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch 6.

Round 16: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *2 dc in next ch 3 space. Dc in next sc, 2 dc in next ch 3 space, dc in next dc.*

Repeat from *to* until next ch 5 corner space.

(3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in ch 5 corner spaces.

Sl st to top of starting ch 3.

Cut thread with scissors, weave in any ends with tapestry needle.

Block your crochet lace square so that it lays totally flat and has straight edges!

Hello everyone, today I have a new, beautiful crochet doily pattern for you to try; The Crosswind Lace Doily!

This doily is based off of the Crosswind Lace Pattern a made a little while ago. I loved the lacy stitch pattern so much I want to try making a doily version of it.

This doily has a really pretty center, then opens up with an airy, lacy middle, and finishes with a simple round edge. The X stitches in the center and outer edge give the doily its name, plus they look really neat!

With only 19 Rounds to complete this doily, I hope you all enjoy!

Crochet Doily Pattern Crosswind Lace Doily

Materials Used:

Abbreviations Used:

  • Ch – chain
  • St – stitch

Crosswind Lace Doily Pattern

Round 1: Place 12 sc into magic ring (or ch 6, sl st to make a ring, ch 1 and place 12 sc into center), sl st to first sc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc into each st around (24 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, sc into same st, *ch 3, skip a st, sc into next st.* Repeat from *to* for 11 ch 3 spaces, for that last ch 3 space, instead of a ch 3, ch 1 and make a hdc into the first sc to join (12 ch 3 spaces)

Round 4: ch 1, sc into same ch 3 space, *ch 4, sc into next ch 3 space.* Repeat from *to* around, sl st to first sc. ( 12 ch 4 spaces)

Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc into next ch 4 space, *dc into next sc, 3 dc into next ch 4 space.* Repeat from *to* around. Sl st to top of starting ch 3. (48 dc)

Round 6: Ch 1, sc into same st. We will now be making the bottom half of these X stitches. 

*Ch 4, 2trtog (see steps above) by placing the first leg in the same st as the sc just made, skip 3 sts, make the second leg into the next st, ch 4, sc into same st as second leg of 2trtog.* Repeat from *to* around. Finish the last half of the X stitch with a ch 4, 2trtog with the first leg in the same st as previous sc and place the second leg into the same st as the first sc of this round (not the sc but top of the ch 3 from Round 5). Ch 4 and sl st to first sc of this round. (12 “bottom” halves of X stitch)

Round 7: sl st up the ch 4 until you get to the first 2trtog from Round 6. Now we will make the top half of the X stitch.

Ch 1, sc into same st. *Ch 4, 2trtog, place the first leg in the same st, and place the second leg into the next 2trtog. Ch 4, sc into same st as the second leg of the 2trtog just made.* Repeat from *to* around. 

Finish with with a ch 4, 2trtog, the first leg in the same st and then the second leg will go into the same st as the starting sc. Ch 4, sl st to first sc of this round. 

Round 8: Ch 6 (counts as dc and ch 3), *sc into next 2trtog, ch 3, dc into next sc, ch 3* Repeat from *to* around, sl st to the 3rd ch of starting ch 6.

Round 9: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *3 dc in next ch 3 space, dc into next sc, 3 dc into next ch 3 space, dc in next dc.* Repeat from *to* around. Sl st to top of starting ch 3. (84 dc)

Round 10: Ch 1, sc, *ch 4, skip 2 sts, sc into next st.* Repeat from *to* around, for the last ch 4, instead of doing a ch 4, ch 1 and dc into the starting sc. (32 ch 4 spaces)

Round 11-13: Ch 1, sc into same ch 4 space, *ch 4, sc into next ch 4 space.* Repeat from *to* around, for the last ch 4 space, make a ch 1 and dc into starting sc.

Round 14: Ch 1, sc into same ch 4 space, *ch 4, sc into next ch 4 space.* Repeat from *to* around. Sl st to first sc.

Round 15: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *5 dc into next ch 4 space, dc into next sc.* Repeat from *to* around. Sl st to top of starting ch 3. (172 dc)

Round 16: Ch 1, sc into same st. We will now be making the bottom half of the X stitches. 

*Ch 4, 2trtog (see steps above) by placing the first leg in the same st as the sc just made, skip 5 sts, make the second leg into the next st, ch 4, sc into same st as second leg of 2trtog.* Repeat from *to* around.

Finish the last half of the X stitch with a ch 4, 2trtog with the first leg in the same st as previous sc and place the second leg into the same st as the first sc of this round (not the sc but top of the ch 3 from Round 16).

Round 17: sl st up the ch 4 until you get to the first 2trtog from Round 16. Now we will make the top half of the X stitch.

Ch 1, sc into same st. *Ch 4, 2trtog, place the first leg in the same st, and place the second leg into the next 2trtog. Ch 4, sc into same st as the second leg of the 2trtog just made.* Repeat from *to* around. 

Finish with with a ch 4, 2trtog, the first leg in the same st and then the second leg will go into the same st as the starting sc. Ch 4, sl st to first sc of this round. 

Round 18: Ch 6, (counts as dc and ch 3), *sc into next 2trtog, ch 3, dc into next sc, ch 3* Repeat from *to* around, sl st to the 3rd ch of starting ch 6.

Round 19: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *3 dc in next ch 3 space, dc into next sc, 3 dc into next ch 3 space, dc in next dc.* Repeat from *to* around. Sl st to top of starting ch 3.

Cut thread and pull through. Weave in any loose ends with your tapestry needle.

Blocking The Crosswind Lace Doily:

I suggest blocking this doily once you are finished. 

To block your doily:

  • Get a bowl and fill it with water
  • Soak your doily in the water (you might have to pushed the doily down as it tends to want to float)
  • After a minute or two, place your doily on a dry towel and gently pat it to get out excess water
  • Using a blocking board or cardboard (you may need to get a mixing bowl and trace around it with a pen as a guide), pin your doily by gently stretching it into the desired shape.
  • Allow to air dry for 24-48 hours or until dry.

Crochet Lace Stitch Pattern – Crosswind Lace Stitch

Hello everyone! Today I have an amazing crochet lace stitch pattern to share with you! I’m calling this the Crosswind Lace Stitch.

The name popped into my head since the main motif in this pattern looks like a criss cross or an X (or maybe it’s a butterfly!? I don’t really know lol!). Plus when it’s worked up a few rows, it makes your fabric very light and airy…like the wind!

Anyways I think this pattern would provide an excellent visual break as a trim for blankets, shawls, scarves or tablecloths. You could also just make the whole project as this pattern, the possibilities are endless!

As always, you may use whatever size yarn and hook your heart desires for this pattern, but I am using size 10 crochet thread and a 1.65mm crochet hook.

Ch a repeat of 6+3

All that means is to chain 6 over and over until you’re happy with the length, then add 3 more chains to the end of that.

Row 1: Dc into 4th ch from hook, dc into each ch across

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), turn, skip a st, *dc into next st, ch 1, skip a st dc into next st.* Repeat from *to,* placing the last dc into the top ch of from foundation row.

Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), turn, skip over ch 1 space, dc into next dc, *ch 1, skip over ch 1 space, dc into next dc.* Repeat from *to,* place the last dc into the 3rd ch of Row 2’s starting ch 3

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, dc into next ch 1 space, *dc into next dc, dc into next ch 1 space.* Repeat from *to,* place last dc into 3rd ch of starting ch 4.

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st. *Ch 4, make a 2trtog, placing the 1st leg in the same st as sc just made, skipping 5 sts and placing the 2nd leg into the next st. Ch 4, sc into the same st as the 2nd leg of 2trtog.* Repeat from *to * place last sc into top of starting ch 3.

Row 6: Ch 4 (counts as tr), turn, tr into next 2trtog from Row 5, *ch 4, sc into same st. Ch 4, 2trtog by placing the 1st leg in the same st as sc just made, then skipping over to the next 2trtog

Row 8: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), turn, *2 dc in next ch 3 space, dc into next dc, 2 dc in next ch 3 space, dc into next sc.* Repeat from *to* across.

Repeat Rows 2-8

Cut yarn with scissors and weave in any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
